Welcome:

Kelly Andamasaris

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful time at our Art Extravaganza this month; we hope you enjoyed being a part of it!

At this event, our families had the opportunity to explore all of the creativity and hard work our students have poured into their artwork this year. Our gym walls were plastered with many unique projects; families were able to view the family trees and quilt, hanging jelly fish, watercolor paintings and much more! These projects were planned by our teachers throughout the year to support the weekly lesson and add fun and creativity to their day. It was a joy to see our student's find their own art and proudly point it out to their friends and family.

Our students and families also worked together to create a horned owl pillow craft. Some of them were even brave enough to sew most of their owl together with a needle and thread. After their hard work, our student's gave a good "hoot hoot" while showing off their finished owls. We were thrilled to see so many unique owls fly home after this fun evening! We hope this will serve as a keepsake to look back on in the coming years. Thank you to all our families who joined us at this event. Our teachers and staff love your children and appreciate all the time we get to spend with them!

We began our month by learning all about weather. First we observed clouds and their characteristics. Students made their own clouds with cotton balls and labeled them cirrus, cumulus and stratus. Next we explored Rain and the Water Cycle. Using some hot water, cotton balls and buckets we demonstrated how rain works. When introducing thunder and lightening we used pie tins to demonstrate the sound of thunder and in Math the children used marbles to count how many thunder claps they heard. We also learned about wind, how it can be used as energy and how wind affects the weather. In Science, students enjoyed making their very own tornado in a bottle. The last topic was meteorologists. We talked about what type of jobs and responsibilities meteorologists have and focused on the various tools they use to determine weather. The students had fun playing a little guessing game. We supplied a large basket filled with seasonal clothes and props. The children took turns either dressing up or predicting the weather.

Landforms came next. First we learned an Island is a piece of land surrounded by water and a Lake is a body of water surrounded by land. In Art the students made diagrams of both landforms using construction paper. In Science we introduced the lake and island molds. These are plastic forms the children poured water in to represent either a lake or an island. The students enjoyed personalizing the molds with little props such as animals, plants, or rocks. Next we used the state of Florida as an example of a peninsula. Students learned the names of the three bodies of water which surround this state. The students were supplied an outline of Florida's shape. They used thumbtacks to poke it out, label it, and place it in our Geography area. Next we turned our focus to waterfalls. Victoria Falls which is located in the country of Zambia is one of the biggest falls in the world. The students created a waterfall by taking turns drawing on a large paper. They named the waterfall Breezy Falls. Lastly the students ended the week by putting together a booklet of all the landforms they learned.

The third week of March, the Amazon Rain Forest was introduced. First we focused on characteristics of a tropical rain forest then the Amazon River and Brazil. We also explored types of animals who make the Amazon their home. In the Sensorial area the students had fun putting together a chain of monkeys. In Math we played a subtraction game where we took bananas away from monkeys and counted to see how many were left over. The students were surprised to learn how many products come from rain forests. The children created a rain forest trail mix by measuring and adding various products in a large bowl. Our recipe consisted of dried pineapple and coconut, banana chips, chocolate chips, and nuts. Yummy!  Our last topic was plant life. We stressed the importance of trees in the rain forest and read the story "The Kapok Tree." The story describes how the rain forest is harmed each time a tree is cut down and how all life is greatly effected by this loss. In Art the students made their own unique trees from construction paper. In Science the children placed soil, rocks and plants in a cup to create their own living rain forests!

Last but not least, we studied Health. We began our week with the Food Pyramid. We discussed all the groups and examples for each. A picnic basket of various foods was placed in the classroom where the students could categorize the food in their proper group. In Language, students had fun playing FOODS bingo and labeling foods as either healthy or junk. Next, we discussed Personal Hygiene. The students gave examples of how we take care of our bodies. They were given a list of personal hygiene products which would aid in keeping their bodies healthy and clean. After finding the product inside of a grocery basket the students would check it off their list. The next topic was muscles and together we sang the "Mighty Muscles" song. During the song the students named many of our muscles and pointed to where they are located on our bodies. They also created a "flexing my biceps" puppet in Art. Our lesson on bones followed. We talked about invertebrate and vertebrate. In Science the students looked at various pictures of animals and decided if they had a backbone or not. The last day we talked about the importance and benefits of exercise. The students learned how to follow an exercise routine. They started with a warm up making sure to slowly stretch their muscles and get them ready. The students were taught specific exercises to target each of the muscles we learned about in class. Lastly they learned how to cool down. Most importantly they were taught that exercise is fun!

March roared in like a lion with spring like weather.  We had a chance to go outside which was very nice for the students and the teachers.  The songs the birds sang while outside went along with our weekly theme of musical instruments.  We learned about the four major families of instruments.  We learned of the woodwind family.  The instruments in the woodwind family were originally made from wood and you blow into them to make music (hence, the name woodwind). Some instruments in this family are flutes, oboes, and clarinets. We discovered the brass family and instruments such as the bassoon, trumpet, and tuba are made from a metal called brass.  We talked about the string family and how the guitar, violin, and cello are part of this family.  By far the favorite family was the percussion family.  The more popular instruments in this family were drums, triangle, and rhythm sticks.  We discovered we could use just about anything we could bang together and it would be a percussion instrument.  We could use our hands, stomping on the ground, or use trash can lids. I want to thank Julia's mom for playing her trumpet for our class. I also wanted to say how amazed we were hearing Mia play the cello and demonstrating to the class different ways to play the instrument. She also gave a great lesson on the parts of the cello.

The class went green for a week learning about recycling, conserving energy, and pollution.  I explained pollution was anything which made our environment dirty.  We also learned about littering.  Littering can be people throwing trash on the side of the road or dropping a candy wrapper in the woods.  We now know that we need to put trash in the appropriate container.  We learned air pollution is created by factory smokestacks and car exhaust.  Water Pollution is caused by factories dumping chemicals in the water or people throwing trash in the water instead of putting it in a trash can.  Ms. Michele created two water bottles comparing clean water and dirty water.  One bottle was clear clean water and the other had dirt, plastic, and other trash.  We asked the children which bottle they would drink or swim in. The 3 R's were introduced and now we all know to reduce, reuse and recycle!  We thought of ways to conserve energy.  We came up with turning off lights in rooms we are not in or turning off the TV if we are not watching it.  We thought of turning off the water while we are brushing our teeth or turning down the heat and wearing a sweater instead.  During the Kindergarten lesson a student realized the room was just as light with the lights off as it was if the lights were on.  Now we do our kindergarten lesson without lights. The class did an art project by making an owl from a paper plate with the slogan "Give a hoot, don't pollute."

We ended the month by learning about the oceans and how the earth is about 75% water.  Oceans give us food, water and help produce oxygen.  We learned what animals live in the ocean.  Animals such as dolphins, whales, all kinds of fish, starfish and crabs all live in the ocean.  We learned how coral reefs are made from skeletons of millions of dead sea creatures and provide food and shelter for our underwater friends.  The classroom was turned into an underwater habitat when the jellyfish art project invaded the room.

Cultural SubjectsFlower2_John2011
The children learned how to count to ten in Swedish.  They can now count to 10 in thirteen languages.

On March 17th we walked into our room to find tables on their sides, chairs tipped over, mats thrown all over the room, and the number rods spread on the floor.  I then told the story of the leprechaun and how they were short creatures that looked like old men.  It is told that they are mischievous and have a pot of gold.  If you catch a leprechaun you must never take your eyes off of them or they will disappear with their gold.  The leprechaun that visited our classroom left gold candy coins.

During spring break our amaryllis finally bloomed after 2 years growing shoots and nothing else.  The bulb was given to me by a student 2 years ago and it has been fun watching it grow and bloom.

Science
This month's science experiment dealt with buoyancy.  We started with 2 oranges (1 unpeeled and 1 peeled).  The unpeeled orange was larger and heavier.  When we placed both oranges in a pail of water the peeled orange sank and the unpeeled orange floated.  We found it a bit strange but there was an explanation.  The unpeeled orange had air trapped inside and the peeled orange had no air to keep it afloat.

Kindergarten Lesson
We started the month learning about fractions.  We worked with the material called the fractional insets and went on to work on fraction worksheets.  We learned fractions are just dividing things into equal parts.  Things can be divided into 2 pieces (halves), 3 pieces (thirds)......even a million pieces (millionths).  Almost anything can be divided equally.  We divided triangles, squares, rectangles, pizzas, candy bars, and even the class.  We have 11 students in the class.  Each student was 1/11 of the class.  We have 4 boys in the class.  We learned the boys in the class are 4/11 of the students and the girls are equal to 7/11.

We ended the month by identifying shapes.  We are well acquainted with the quatrefoil, curvilinear triangle, ellipse, and oval.  We know that a quadrilateral is a shape with four sides.  We found that we have some special quadrilaterals such as squares, rectangles, trapezoids, parallelograms, rhombus, and the chevron.  We know the triangle has 3 sides and investigated further to find out that a triangle that has 3 equal sides is called an equilateral triangle.  A triangle with 2 equal sides is called an Isosceles triangle. And finally a triangle with no equal sides is called a scalene triangle.  Counting to 10 in Greek came in handy when we learned about pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, nonagons, and decagons.

Our class started out the month of March with Fire Safety.  We learned all about smoke detectors, fire alarms, the importance of a fire fighter and even the correct way to safely get out of a burning building.  We also had the opportunity to have a fire fighter come in to share with us about his job.  The class was able to hold and use Fireman LaRock's equipment and try on his uniform. He assured the class that fire fighters are their friends and they are there to help in an emergency.  He taught the children to sleep with their bedroom doors shut and to always have a family escape plan.

Together we pretended we were in our bedrooms and a fire started in our home.  The children knew to check the door first as well as the door handle.  If it was cool to the touch, the children could use that door as an escape.  At that point they need to "get low and go"!  We practiced crawling under a sheet and pretended it was smoke.  We also discussed the proper action to take if we or our clothing caught on fire.  Everyone had the opportunity to stop, drop and roll.  We also learned, while rolling, it is important to put our hands over our faces.  To end our Fire Safety week, the children took a fun-filled field trip to the Cuyahoga Falls Fire Station. After this week, we have some future fire fighters in our class!

Our next topic was transportation.  Planes, trains and automobiles of all types were discussed.  We learned about jets and propeller planes, as well as many military air crafts.  The students learned in order for an airplane to fly it must always engage in a tug of war between the opposing forces of lift versus weight and thrust versus drag.   We made airplanes out of Popsicle sticks and tested their flight.  We also discussed emergency vehicles and learned when you are on the road and see one with its lights and sirens on, you must pull over and let them pass.  We read some stories about different types of trains and created our own brownie delight trains which turned out beautifully delicious.

After our transportation lesson ended, we followed it up with a focus on its history. We looked at many different types of transportation and studied which one was invented first.  We went back as early as the wheel all the way to the futuristic concept cars of tomorrow.  We talked about the steam engine, stage coach, subway system and the airplane.  The children learned all about the Wright Brothers and their contribution to aviation as well as the brave female pilot, Amelia Earhart. We also discussed Henry Ford's talents and gifts to the world of automobiles.

This week we also had a visit from a little green man who decided to steal our gold and leave our classroom a mess!  On the eve of Saint Patrick's Day we set up a trap to catch a Leprechaun.  Well... needless to say the sneaky little thing came into our room, helped himself to our coins and made a HUGE mess for us to clean up.  The children couldn't believe he was able to get out of the trap we made that consisted of tables, chairs and a blanket.  They even displayed shiny coins and Leprechaun books and pictures to entice the little fellow!  He even had the audacity to steal the coconuts right off my tree!  Thanks to Leona the coconuts were recovered and we worked together to get our room back in order.

We ended our month with a lesson in Community Helpers.  We learned about what it takes to keep a community running, safe and clean! In order for this to happen we need Community Helpers.  This was such a great lesson and I think the children learned a lot about certain professions.  We had so many wonderful speakers come in to share about their jobs, including: a traveling accountant, a team of hair stylists, the destructive owner of Eslich Wrecking, a flexible yoga instructor, an inventive toy designer, an entertaining ballet instructor and a very talented and crafty mother and owner of B is for Baby!  All of the children truly enjoyed our visitors and learned a lot. I really appreciate all of the parents and families who took their time to entertain and educate the class.

As many of you have noticed, I have a new addition to my class.  Mr. C. has been working with me for the past few weeks and I adore him as much as the children do.  His presence adds so much to the classroom and I am thankful for his calming, patient ways.  I look forward to working with him for the rest of the school year and am excited for him to share his talents with your children.

Spanish with Miss Tabby:

Tabby McCulloch

Hola! The month of Marzo (March) has been exciting!  Our students have been so amazing and eager to learn new things.  With the Spanish language, as with any language, repetition is the key to setting a solid foundation of vocabulary words.  Our students are learning the names of our current months as well as the "dias de la semana" (days of the week).  Spanish always falls on "Lunes" (Monday).  We have practiced weather terms as well as reciting our colors.  Ask your child to sing the color song, it's their favorite!!!  With the International Festival approaching, we have been practicing the Spanish song "La Cucaracha."  The children love fun song about a little cockroach.  We have also been doing a lot of dancing "bailar" as well as singing "cantar" to new songs.  These new songs have also been a great hit.  Students have also learned about the Mexican flag "bandera" and it's colors "verde, blanco y rojo" and the proper pronunciation for Mexico is (Me-hee-co).  It is a joy teaching your children Spanish every week. "Adios!"

Sign Language with Ms. Kristin:

Afton Knight

During the month of March, Ms. Kristin planned creative lessons in Sign Language class. The students enjoyed Dr. Seuss' Birthday and St. Patrick's Day the most!

Dr. Seuss' birthday is on March 2nd, so we celebrated it on Friday of that week. A Seuss favorite is "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish."  We read the book and the children were taught signs for each page. They learned signs for things such as fish, colors, old, new, big, and small. We used laminated pictures from the book, cut in different shapes and put together to make the story on the floor. Students loved this!

In our next class, we learned all about St. Patrick's Day. There were many different signs we learned such as gold, rainbow and lucky. At the beginning of class, Ms. Kristin played a game. She would sign and the students would guess what the sign meant. Whoever guessed correctly was the head leprechaun and got to wear a special hat. Ms. Kristin planned another fun activity on this special day.  She hid pictures around the room and the students got to find them. Then they matched the picture of the sign they had with their friends' sign. Signing new words is something they love to do!

Clay Bedford says it best with this quote, "You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives." The kids at Absorbent Minds love to learn and Sign Language class is one of the most creative places they go. Ms. Kristin teaches them in a unique way, and seeing them grow is so very inspiring.

Music with Ms. Lisa:

Michele Hayden

The children had so much fun in music class this past month. We sang "John Jacob Jingle Hymer Schmitt" and reviewed piano and forte. One of the teachers sat in the middle of the circle and students sang the song piano while the teacher "fell asleep." Then they switched to forte and woke up their teacher by loudly singing Lalalalala! It was a lot of fun!

Ms. Lisa got out her bubbles and taught her students legato which is smooth rhythm and staccato which is jumpy rhythm. They popped bubbles staccato or legato to the matching music.

Next we explored different parts of a choir. The director of a choir is the leader. A soloist is one singer by them self and a choir is everyone singing at the same time. We also sang "Ten Little Indians" and learned to play only in the middle of the song which is called a musical interlude.

Since we are getting close to our International Festival Ms. Lisa taught the children a traditional African song "Great Big Stars" and we tapped to the beat with rhythm sticks. We also listened to the sounds of Mozart and danced to the music. The Kids are always learning so much with Ms. Lisa in music class!
